Currently the world is in the middle of the largest economic recession in 100
years.
BUT...Today I'm going to demonstrate to you why this economic downturn might
just be the perfect time for you to start a new business or expand your existing one.
As I've said over the past week, a recession is one of the best times to launch a new
business. And it's a great way to be a part of the solution.
Because it is the desire for profits and the often opportunistic drive that motivates
people to create new industries and business models that will lift the nation out of its
current recession.
History doesn't exactly repeat itself, however there is definitely some déjà vu that
goes on during and right after recessions. Namely, an upsurge in the number of millionaires
created. History is filled with examples of companies founded and started during economic
tough times.
In fact, just over half of the companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average
were started during a recession.
The media giant Walt Disney Company, home of Mickey Mouse and other beloved
characters, has a history of taking advantage of recessions. Walt Disney developed
Mickey Mouse in 1928. It was the first cartoon with sound and dialogue.
In 1955, after the recession of 1953-54, the Walt Disney Company opened their first
theme park, Disneyland. The year after the recession of 1970, they expanded to Florida
with Walt Disney World. They went International with their theme parks in 1983 after
the early '80's recession. And bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009 after the late 2000's
recession.
Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard founded Hewlett Packard (HP) out of a garage in 1939
right after the 1937-38 recession. Incidentally, Walt Disney Studios was one of HP's
first customers buying eight of the first product they ever developed, an audio oscillator.
More people became millionaires during the great depression than at any other time in
American history. People were able to buy bankrupt businesses and real estate. Companies
like Douglas Aircraft and John Deere as well as companies that made uniforms, tents and
military vehicles cashed in from military spending. Even Revlon cosmetics made money
from military spending by manufacturing first aid kits and dye markers for the navy.
Of course there are hundreds of other examples of millionaires made during or right
after recessions...
This is because when things are bad, there are often dramatic changes. And
change means opportunity.
Some of the opportunities available to you right now as a result of this change in our
economy are:
- Low interest rates to entice spending.
- Consumers are shopping around for new alternatives for products and services they need.
- Many companies have cut back on their marketing, meaning they aren't as visible to
consumers, which leaves you room to make your product or service more visible.
- Competitors have cut back on services to reduce expenses giving you the opportunity
to fill the gap.
- Companies are selling out and/or owners are retiring providing you the opportunity to
buy an existing business at low capital.
- There is an excess of smart, hard-working employees who've been laid off or are without
work and eager to work for you.
The question is, after this time has come and gone, when the economy is good again...
What will you say?
Will you be bragging about the foreclosed building you bought and the low interest rate you are
paying on your office space or will you be kicking yourself because property has skyrocketed?
Will you have high quality employees who are still grateful to you for bringing them on board
during a difficult time in their life when no one else would hire them--or will the qualified
employees you find (if you can find them) be demanding ridiculously high salaries to leave their
current employer?
Will you be struggling to compete in your market--like realtors were a few years back when
everybody and their brother got their realtor license?
Will you be celebrating living the life you always dreamed of? Or will you still be living life like
you are now - still waiting for the timing to be just right?
